Throwback: R-E-S-P-E-C-T Aretha earned it by hitting No. 1 in June 1967

Fifty-one years ago, Otis Redding wrote a song to let his woman know she can do whatever she wants as long as she shows him a little respect when he comes home. Two years later, Aretha Franklin spelled it out even better and R-E-S-P-E-C-T became a battle cry of love and a sing-along for the ages.

Franklin's version of "Respect" reached No. 1 on two Billboard charts—pop and R&B—on this date in 1967, and it remained the top R&B single for eight weeks. Redding's reaction was classic and, of course, respectful. "That girl stole my song," he said.

That song has been stealing hearts and stirring souls ever since. In 2004, "Respect" was ranked No. 5 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
